Working on a stained glass project, immersed in the history of the "Bleu de Chartres," the artist drew inspiration from the materiality of the stained glass windows in this iconic cathedral. Inspired by the description of these windows as a "materia saphirorum" (a material of sapphire) by Abbot Suger, Mathieu Merlet Briand seeks to evoke a spiritual wonder through the thousands of luminous points. His artworks capture the essence of this colored blue light, inviting the viewer into an immersive and transcendental contemplative experience.
Mathieu Merlet Briand aligns himself with the history of abstraction. In his works, we can see an affinity with Yves Klein's iconic monochromes and his artistic approach, the quest for the absolute, purity, and the sublime. There is also a connection to impressionist paintings. Similar to Monet and his famous water lilies, he seeks to capture the changing light and its reflections in his artworks, creating an organic and vibrant materiality in his monochromes.
This new series of artworks #COBLAT-BLUE combines the spiritual depth of Chartres' stained glass windows, the purity of the monochrome, and the materiality of impressionism. By exploring this "COBLAT BLUE" through the technology developed for his lenticular paintings, Mathieu Merlet Briand seeks to continue the art history of abstraction to create contemporary visual experiences, a profound and meditative aesthetic experience.

Concerned about environmental issues, "COLONNE" is a minimal sculpture-object "manifesto" that Mathieu Merlet Briand developed during his studies at Arts Déco (2012). Used daily in his studio as both a stool, side table, and modular sculpture, he decided to produce a limited edition series (2018-19). Here at 3537 is exhibited some of the last pieces of this limited edition series.

DAWA
"DAWA" in Arabic can either mean "disorder" or "bazaar". This word and the cessation of 3537, are the inspirations for the group exhibition that will be held at the Hotel Particulier. This exhibition presents a group of artists whose mediums range from sculpture to sonic installations and even memes. This exhibition is curated by Latif Samassi, a member of 3537.
« With this presentation, I wanted to focus on the aesthetic experience, rather than the excessive conceptualization that often comes with curating an exhibition of this magnitude. This 10-day exhibition will showcase works by more than 30 international dynamic artists, who range from emerging to established. This visually staggering showcase of art is significant, as it is a heterogeneity of voices within contemporary art. » Curator, Latif Samassi
Despite the apparent chaos suggested by the term "Dawa", the exhibition features careful organization and attention to detail. This exhibition is a celebration of beauty and pleasure, as a way of bidding farewell to 3537. Dawa opens on the first day of June and should not be missed.
